Presentation
LibreHwDB? is yet another hardware database for GNU/Linux and (possibly) other free operating systems. Main difference will be identification of hardware-drivers' license & dependancies to evaluate both freedom and workability of driver for products.
There are many potential uses, with a more lengthy description at
http://wiki.eagle-usb.org/wakka.php?wiki=GnuHwDb (the name
LibreHwDB? is currently preferred to
GnuHwDb)
The hosting at gna.org will be :
- organizational : ML for dev, perhaps for operations of the main website (not hosted at gna.org as PHP/MySQL? are the current choice for implementation)
- development : store source code for tools / DB and php code for website
- development : store database extractions of reference tables in several formats (volume to be determined), in order to be (as much as possible) automatically provided to detection tools
The project is currently at specification stage then prototyping.
May reuse hwdb-clients tools (GPL) by Mandriva
http://cvs.mandrakesoft.com/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/hwdb/ or existing tools in other distributions
Tools can be licensed under GPL or BSD (on *BSD systems for examples)
For database content (reference tables), I'm not sure which license is relevant : if you've got any idea ? Should be clearly identified during the prototyping step (In France, CNIL can protect the database structure - not sure if it's relevant in our case - and content is intended to be used either in *BSD or GPL systems, "as usual" with no guarantee of accuracy or "as best as possible").
