A request Smile. Could people who are having issues with X.org on 2006.0 - particuarly with ATI, Nvidia, Matrox and Unichrome adapters - please test some updated X.org RPMs? An updated version of X.org went into Cooker recently, and Hawkwind has been kind enough (thanks, Hawkwind!) to rebuild it on 2006.0 for testing. If you could, please install the updated packages from his seerofsouls repository, and see if they solve your issues. Then please report back - either to me, or in this thread - what your X.org problem is, and whether this update solved it. Thanks!

Instructions for adding SoS? as an urpmi media are here: http://seerofsouls.com/rpm2006.html . Alternatively, you can download the RPMs individually from http://seerofsouls.com/RPMS-2006/ .

It would also be great if some adventurous souls who have no problems with X.org in 2006 could install this update and make sure it doesn't break anything!

Good night, from Spain.

So and as I have commented before, the problems with my ATi 9000 Radeon Pro/AGP have been solved. Everything perfectly works with the revision

xorg-x11-6.9-1.cvs20051011.1mdk.i586

that today I have lowered to cooker.

Driver ATi - Radeon(fglrx) works and driver Xorg - radeon.

Also the VIA/S3 Unichrome Pro IGP (chipset K8N800) works without problems.

Tomorrow I will prove with two NVidia cards this version of cooker and those of SeerOfSouls?.

I will send answer.

Thanks and a greeting.

My X.org problem is the strange (lime green/purple) colour scheme in 24-bit colour mode, as widely reported in this forum, Bugzilla, review on OS news...

This bug was partially cured by changing to 16-bit colour, but this left the mouse pointer/cursor fuzzy and translucent (almost invisible on some backgrounds), also text and icons would shift to the left as you passed the mouse pointer over them, then shift back when you moved focus to another window. If you scrolled text using the mouse pointer, you would often get lines where the top half of the characters was misaligned with the bottom half.

I have updated using the packages in cooker (as suggested in another thread), and this has cured all the above problems, except in the Gnome Control Centre, where I still see the text under the icons shift about as I move the mouse pointer about (this no longer happens in other applications, like Mozilla).

Same here.

Following the instructions on SoS? for adding the media and then installing all xorg-x11-6.9-1.cvs20051011 packages. I reconfigured the video card, letting it default to ATi - Radeon(fglrx). It forced me to 24-bit color. The video test looked great.

I logged out and let X reset. Once X reset everything looked GREAT!

I have a ATI 9000 Radeon/Pro.

Greetings,

I just installed the Xorg packages that AdamW? had requested that I build for my SoS? RPM Repository and restarted X to test it. Everything works without a glitch. Nvidia 7676 drivers are installed and working as they are supposed to and everything looks great.

I however was one who hadn't experienced any problems with the previous Xorg so as I promised to Adam that I would install them and verify nothing new came up on my system as far as bugs.

Everything looks great and acts great to this point. I don't foresee any changes on that either.

Adam
If you need any other packages built and tested like this you know where to find me and I'll be more than happy to be of assistance.
Thanks for asking me to do this and for promoting my repository. It's greatly appreciated Smile

My repo is always there for anyone interested. Most of our stuff is backports from Cooker to the latest stable. If anyone has special requests feel free to contact me and I'll look into it.

I had previous trouble with my ATI 9200 and xorg6.9 which I corrected by using the ATI proprietary driver. I updated xorg6.9 using the SoS? updates. I lost my speed and 3D. Tuxracer became a crawl. I reinstalled the ATI drivers and all is well. I may have a driver mismatch that gives me the problem. I did try to use the fglrx driver in MCC. However it was also slow.

Here again.
Today I have installed the Mandriva-Powerpack-2006 in a PC with a NVIDIA GeForce4? MX 4000.
It only works in mode VESA.

After updating with xorg-x11-6.9-1.cvs20051011.1mdk.i586 of cooker everything he was perfect:
Driver NVIDIA-GeForce4? (generic)
Resolution 1024 X 768
Color 24 bits

I lower the packages related to xorg-x11 to a directory and located in him I do
rpm - Fvh * rpm
Without problems.
This late I will prove with a NVIDIA GeForce4? MX 440

The SoS? RPMs are compiled for i586. I'm running the x86_64 version of the distro, so my existing xorg version is compiled for that architecture. What would you suggest? Try replacing the old x86_64 package with the new i586 package? Or see if the SRPM is available for the SoS? package and try compiling it for x86_64? If the former, will I have problems running programs compiled for x86_64 on top of Xorg for i586?

Running the i586 version should be possible, but if you want to stick with x86-64, you can grab the .src.rpm from Cooker (/devel/cooker on the FTP mirrors). If you rebuild it and you have somewhere to host it for others, that'd be great also Smile

It's better, I still have issues with a geforce 6600GT.
No more freezes, that's good, because it means I could boot into X and install the nvidia drivers.

But, as to use them all the time, it's not possible:
-high X CPU usage, launching a window slows every thing down. Using gimp for example, if I make a selection, i have to move the tool slowly or it will miss parts of the screens.
-lauching 3 apps and switching virtual desktop as they were still booting resulted in a corrupted display. (I had this problem with suse9.3 and last ubuntu 's xorg 6.9 and i have the nv freeze with current ubuntu's xorg. I had no problem with xorg 6.8's nv.)

-Other problem: launchig a second X session and switching back and forth between the 2 during its boot deep froze the PC.
My guess is that nvidia hasnt really tuned those drivers for 6600GTs.

Just tried this to solve a colour problem on my laptop (see : http://forum.mandrivaclub.com/viewtopic.php?p=171429) but it makes no difference at all as far as I can tell, so back to 16bit colour and awaiting further fixes.

Adam,

I installed the packages from SoS?, and still have problems. When I run drakconf to configure my display and test it, I get the following:
(EE) Unable to open /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.a
(EE) Failed to load /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.a

Well, in that directory, all librarries are the .so type, including libglx.so.

I tried to change parameters, but got the same results.

If I run startx, I get:

(EE) Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap.
Could not init font path element unix/:-1, removing from list!
Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'.

My card is an ATI Radeon X300 series

Please advise,
Thanks
Fernando

I was having no problems, but felt adventurous. I installed the SoS? RPMs and everything is working beautifully. Tested with Radeon 7500 and Radeon 9200 SE. Hope this info is not too late to be of use.

Good job, Hawkwind999?. Very Happy

What is the difference between installing the new binary packages from Cooker, and building from the Cooker SRPMS? The new version seems only to have a single dependency (lib64xorg-x11), which I assume also gets built when I build from the source package. I'm in the middle of running rpmbuild on the SRPMS at the moment, but is this going to give me anything different to downloading the binary packages from Cooker?

I have an fx-geforce-5200 running the 7676 driver from nvidia. The system seemed slow and unresponsive, although I had fairly good 3D
acceleration. Firefox loaded slowly, as did mcc.

I added the SOS repository and updated 29 packages including amarok, the gimp, and many X-related packages ( XOrg, X11 etc).
After the upgrade I lost 3D acceleration, X got hosed ( I couldn't startx)
and was stranded at the CLI. I reinstalled the nvidia driver and everything is ok. The system is quicker and more responsive but glxgears only shows 49 frames in 5.0 seconds = 9.778 FPS. The openGL screensavers are pretty snappy though.

This upgrade seems to have improved how X behaves. Thanks for alerting us to this repository, and thanks Hawkwind for the excellent
work.

cheers

bg: practically speaking there probably isn't much difference. It's just good practice to rebuild on the target distro.

linuxswan: that looks like a configuration / font problem, not related to Xorg 6.9CVS in particular. I believe there's a thread in one of the tips 'n' tricks forums with several things you can do about the 'fixed' font problem.

Adam,

I would be happy to test. Do you know if this would have any effect when using Dell DKMS with ATI? I would guess it would not make a difference, that I am having a DKMS/Dell problem, but since I know next to nothing about DKMS I thought I would ask.

Er, what exactly is dkms doing on your system? Building the ATI driver? You don't exactly 'use' DKMS directly. DKMS builds modules for you.

The new xorg packages fixed the OpenGL problem I had on my
Toshiba Tecra M1 laptop. Previously OpenGL apps would just
crash. I did have to manually edit the xorg.conf to correct
the glx extension line from

Load "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.a"

to

Load "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so"

but all seems better now.

I'm still a little confused by the multiple versions of libGL.so in
/usr/X11R6/lib, some from xorg and some from libMesaGL1-5.0.2-11mdk.
Some of my OpenGL apps require the link libGL.so to point at
the MesaGL? version.

I had the same problem with a Matrox G450,
with 32-bit color I got some type of reverse video, all was green,
with 16-bit color the look was better but not OK.

Using the xorg packages from SoS?, as indicated in this topic,
solved all my display problems.

Thanks

First I'd like to thank Hawkwind for building the packages and serving them. Setting up SoS? site as a urpmi source worked without a hitch.

Unfortunately, the upgraded xorg didn't help on a system with i810 video. Still must do 16-bit color to avoid green and pink screen garbage. Even then, ppracer displays about 1 FPS. Neither problem occurred with MDK 10.1.

I had no luck trying to install 2006 and have the 3d driver for ATI Radeon 9600 Mobility. Has this been resolved yet? I went back to 2005LE.

I have a EMachines M6805 AMD64 3000+ Laptop.

Everything in 2006 is functional except the ATI driver. The 1280x800 res is expanded past the borders of the LCD and I did try to change "Virtual 1280x800" in the xorg.conf to "mode 1280x800" and it still didn't work. Any ideas?

Hey tsoda01,

I did the same, went back to 2005LE. However, I am considering a second try, this weekend, since I will have more time to work around the problems. I saw a couple of postings that gave me an idea.
My card is a Radeon RV370, and my machine is a Dell desktop. I really love Mandriva. My laptop died last weekend, and I want to get a new one, but one that is known to work best with Mandriva.

Good luck, and I will be looking around for any fixes for your specific case.

I have an ATI FireGL? v3200 (Thinkpad T43P), and I was experiencing random system freezes (usually right after clicking on various things) with the Mandriva 2006 release (using the fglrx driver with DKMS, off the DVD). These problems had NOT manifested with the Release Candidates.

Last week, I updated to the SoS? X.org packages, and I have not seen the system freeze again. Since the original symptom was random, and could go all day without a repeat (although failing within minutes of boot was more common), I cannot be 100% sure that the problem is solved. But so far, so good.
