Some feedback about Mandriva 2006 for those who would install it from CD or DVD and experience some problems...
Many of that problems are cured after general release, installing several months after is a good solution to solve them quite rapidly (if the correction has been found). Perhaps a 2006.1 version will be released with corrections included...
First and foremost :

list of (currently being) solved issues
- problems with xorg and video drivers : http://forum.mandrivaclub.com/viewtopic.php?t=40905 or see PbMandriva2006xorg (x86 architecture, not x86_64)
- menus were not complete at install [solved] after urpmi --auto-select ; update-menus -v
- problem with sound (arts error)
- some unexplained reboot (with nexuiz : perhaps due to sound problem)
- I'd need an alert when the battery is low [solved] enable acpi and add packages laptop-mode-tools kdeutils-klaptop
- check suspend / wake-up
install from cdrom
- use boot.iso (12 MB), burn it on a CDRW for example
- see documentation at http://qa.mandriva.com/twiki/bin/view/Main/CookerHowTo_Fr
- modify your BIOS settings : verify that CDROM is enabled to boot first
- When booting with boot.iso, you can press F1 (for more options) or Enter (for installation), waiting too long chooses by default the installation option
- you can then choose the installation method : NFS server, FTP server, HTTP server, KA server, CDROM drive, Hard disk (and Load third party modules) : choose FTP http server
- now, once you are sure that your computer starts on the cdrom,
- you can now plug in the ethernet cable to obtain an IP via DHCP
- on your other computer, mount the ISO files in the HTTP server DocRoot
- mkdir -p /var/www/html/iso1
- mount -t iso9660 mandrakelinux-10.0-CD1.i586.iso /var/www/html/iso1 -o loop
- verify that http://localhost/iso1 shows the content of the ISO file (the file index.html should be automatically displayed)
- choose http installation
- you are prompted to choose the network interface (LAN), I hope you have a DHCP server on your network (I'm using a Linksys WRT54G that includes one)
- choose network connection type : DHCP
- no need to enter a host name nor domain name (we are going to use only the IP) : Ok
- the DHCP request is made, then
- no need to enter http proxy host as we are using an HTTP server on the LAN : Ok
- choose specify the mirror manually : HTTP server http://192.168.0.102 , Mandriva Linux directory : iso1 (take care : the keyboard may be using qwerty rather than azerty...)
- error message : could not get file /iso1/install/stage2/mdkinst.clp (aaarrrrrrggggggghhhh)
- entering http://192.168.1.102/iso1 at the second line (and nothing on the first) makes the installation go back to the choice of network card ?!
- verify that http://192.168.1.102/iso1/install/stage2/mdkinst.clp can be accessed
- verify that your firewall is open for http access ;-) (that was my problem, as usual) now tail -f /var/log/httpd/access_log shows that an IP has downloaded the file to start install...
- it now displays Loading program into memory => it works !!! good parameters are : 192.168.1.102 (only the IP/hostname without http before) then iso1 for directory
- choose the installation method : HTTP server
- well at this stage I lost the keyboard... had to reboot :-(
- restart by booting cdrom, type F1 to choose linux for installation in graphical mode (better than text ;-) )
- now the language is proposed : choose Français
- choose keyboard : Français
- choose level of security, do not enter an admin (root by default I think...)
- choose personalized partitionning : I want to use partition 2 with 23 GB available (in fact the 1st partition is a hidden one of 1,8 Go), so I chose the 3rd...
- at this stage I was not sure...
- choose /mnt/win_d (3rd partition), then suppress (or erase...)
- click create
- size in Mo : 1024 (yes 1GB) for swap then ok
- size in Mo : 21069 (the remaining) as Journalized FS : ext3, mount point / then ok
- click Expert then format for hda6 as everything is partitionned (I have some doubt about this hidden partition...), the mbr is written
install all packages you want (do not select LSB...)
- 23:00 the installation begins : estimated terminating time 30mn (have a look at the ads : skype, intel, mandriva, firewall, search on desktop, new package management, better performances, new kernel & gcc, delta rpm, configuration for low-resource machines, boot time reduction, Mandriva easier to use, recent KDE & Gnome, fast & easy installation, 60 wizards, better appearance, more support, better hardware support, Xen support, more information mandriva.com, store, support.mandriva.com, community club.mandriva.com, system up to date with online.mandriva.com)
- 23:19 end of package installation
- password for root, creation of user (ah only one ?)
summary : nearly everything installed
- system : keyboard, country, time, mouse (universal ps/2 or usb, usb in this case, even mousewheel works)
- hardware : printer (no printer), sound card (intel corp I/O controller hub audio), graphical interface (not configured)
- configure graphical interface : GeForce FX proposed by default (for a geforce 6200 go... seems ok), Flat panel 1024x768 by default (choose 1280x800), 16 billion colors (24 bits)
- network & internet : network (ethernet), proxy (not configured)
- security : level (standard), firewall (inactive)
- boot partition : lilo graphic /dev/hda
- system : services (30 enabled / 34 registered)
23:37 reboot to take into account fresh installation and verify that everything works
first boot
- information arts message : sound server international message : error while initializing the sound driver : device default can't be opened for playback (no such file or directory). the sound server will continue, using the null output device
- 23:38:53 boot linux 23:39:27 nvidia logo 23:39:33 firsttime (do not configure)
- 0:29:34 begin boot 0:30:15 nvidia 0:30:30 gnome 0:30:38 started
- strange, the gnome menu is not complete :
- only konqueror, not firefox
- no mcc (neither package configuration...)
- solved with urpmi --auto-select ; update-menus -v # now I've got everything in the menus (I think...)
- no laptop management ?
- add some tools :
- libdvdcss2 to read encrypted / DRMed / flawed DVDs
- gkrellm to check resource consumption
alternate installation : from boot.iso, with ISO files
If your ISO are on a second hard disk, let's say sda4 in directory Mandriva
- enter the directory /Mandriva/ with leading and trailing /
install other programs / drivers
- check your hardware
- glxgears... multimedia keys
InstallJava
InstallPlugin

- In brief :
- install you kernel-source
urpmi --fuzzy kernel-source # installer les sources du noyau (ne pas prendre la version stripped, prendre la version standard), be sure to have media
main for urpmi, see
http://easyurpmi.zarb.org
vi /usr/src/Makefile # edit with vi (you can use gedit if you want...) the default Makefile to remove the word custom from EXTRAVERSION variable (only this, keep the version)
- go to http://www.alsa-project.org/ and take latest version for alsa driver oss library utils (as of today, 20051113 : 1.0.10rc3). You should take driver, oss, library, utils
- untar the file in a directory /home/root/Developpement/alsa/ : mkdir -p /home/root/Developpement/alsa/ ; cd /home/root/Developpement/alsa/
- tar jxvf alsa-lib*bz2 # and the same for 3 other files
- cd alsa-lib-1.0.10rc3/ # begin with the library => used by driver
- ./configure ; make uninstall ; make ; make install # and check at each step that there is no error, if ./configure shows error, install needed things (urpmi gcc-c++ for example, add urpmi --fuzzy gettext to compile correctly alsa-utils)
- then do the same for driver, oss, utils # there should be no error, otherwise check with google if people encountered them
- check twice that there was no error
- try aplay /usr/share/games/supertux/sounds/fall.wav # (you may have to urpmi supertux) if it works, it's finished, just reboot to check that your sound is correctly taken into account
- you may have to modify /etc/modprobe.conf or use alsaconf (the documentation about it should be more clear... be sure to have snd-hda-intel available). I think those lines are needed (not sure) :
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
