I bought a new laptop Hewlett Packard HP Pavilion DV6162ea this is a dv6000 model also known as dv6162 which includes
- Core 2 Duo Intel T5500 (1,66 Ghz) / RAM 2048 MB DDR2
- nvidia Geforce Go 7400 256 MB (turbocache : maybe 128 MB are dedicated, could not check it really)
- ~120 GB hard disk
- 15" WXGA 1280x800 BrightView / webcam integrated
- some nice features :
- wifi and touchpad can be disabled with a switch (works with GNU/Linux)
- I saw on this post that fn+F7 and fn+F8 would work to dim/brighten the screen (indeed they work ! though I'm not sure it really saves some battery power...).
- I'm missing
- a middle-button on the touchpad (like on the mouse), pressing both buttons to paste works quite well though...
- perhaps buttons to use the CD only with no screen (I think that it works quite well with asus laptops)
- VT is not supported by the microprocessor, so I can only use Xen with modified OS
I installed
Mandriva One Free Gnome 2007
first results
- what is working out of the box (or nearly) :
- ethernet
- wifi (with appropriate ipw3945 driver and blob firmware :/ ),
- touchpad with lateral and vertical sidebars (respectively at the bottom and on the right of the touchon), the button to disable the touchpad can be useful when you have a mouse
- key fn (with numeric keyboard : hold shift as well or just hold fn+ver num)
- external speaker
- SATA disk is correctly recognized with kernel 2.6.17
- have to check :
- IR telecommand, well it works quite completely
- sdcard reader (did not read automatically the one I inserted...),
- other screen (and perhaps television with svideo)
- speaker output for earphones + spdif + external microphone
- what will probably not work :
- webcam, in fact it does !! (see below with uvcvideo driver)
- additional keys to control dvd and sound (mute / level) at the top of the keyboard : in fact, they all almost work
first install
- boot mandriva one live-cd with option (typing F1) noapic acpi=off nolapic (did not try others) otherwise HAL will remain stuck at detecting hardware (maybe check DSDT to verify if it's correct)
- by default a strange kernel is installed
Linux benlap.eagle-usb.org 2.6.17-5mdvlegacy #1 SMP Wed Sep 13 14:40:00 EDT 2006 i686 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T5500 @ 1.66GHz GNU/Linux
- ipw3945 for wifi was not installed by mandriva 2007 free (had to install it from plf with urpmi, should be available with mandriva one non-free which I did not use)

Some bugs encountered
- problem with netprofile
- the bug is identified as Bug:26562 (interwiki)
- many services are disabled : dm (for desktop), xfs (for fonts), sshd, ...
- just enable them one by one (at least xfs then dm) to launch gnome again
- closing the laptop makes the desktop manager crash (perhaps due to nvidia driver...), that's suspend to RAM or to disk that does not work...
- Check Bug:17844 (interwiki) to report upstream my Bug:27113 (interwiki) about unknown pciids
things to get to work
- suspend to disk : find a tutorial to configure the disk space required for suspend (and prey that closed-source nvidia driver supports it :/ )
- webcam 0c45:62c0 seems supported :
- get cpufreqd to change : ok, seems to work when choosing cpu0 and "gouverneur=powersave"
- check if screen luminosity can be changed to spare battery power
- get microphone to work, seems to work (at least once, with ekiga)
- get sound to work for earphones
- stange problem with DVD : many seem not readable even though libdvdcss is there (maybe due to DVD-RAM)

suspend to ram :
pmsuspend ram OK
suspend to disk :
pmsuspend disk KO for the moment being (maybe some configuration needed as I start it manually with
dhclient eth0)
- it's better to configure suspend to ram when closing the laptop screen (for the moment being)
DVD problem
